Van Pickerill made a damning statement to investigators which squarely pointed the finger at Mayor Bosse. The statement detailed a payment of $1,000 and a gift of several thousand dollars worth of whiskey to Mayor Bosse. There was one problem with it though—it went missing.

Were Pickerill’s statements intentionally sanitized from the investigative notes to shield Mayor Bosse from prosecution? If that’s the case, Charles Smith, the agent in Evansville, was apparently unaware of it and had no involvement.  Up to this point the investigators had included Mayor Bosse in their list of people to be prosecuted, however, with Van Nuys in charge, Bosse was inexplicably dropped from prosecution.
