Letter From John Nolan to U.S. Attorney Slack Re an Investigation

On October 16, 1919, John J. Nolan wrote in reply to U.S. Attorney L. Ert Slack. This letter suggests that Slack was investigating Bosse. At the very least, it shows that Nolan disliked Bosse.

The reference to Jerome was likely about New York District Attorney William T. Jerome who was known for personally leading raids in his crusade against corruption and crime. The reference to Heney was probably about Francis Joseph Heney, the district attorney who prosecuted the San Francisco graft trials and survived being shot in the head by a prospective juror.

The convicted Bunco-Steerer was likely Fred Huggins, who succeeded Louis Oehlman as Deputy U.S. Marshal. Huggins had a restaurant at Fulton Avenue and Second Street and was an active worker for the Democrats. The Attorney General of Indiana filed suit in circuit court asking that Huggins' restaurant be deemed a nuisance after deputies raided it and found a quart of whiskey.
